The Division of Hospital Medicine is one of the youngest divisions in the Department of Medicine. It was formed by Drs. Mark Thoelke and John Lynch in 2000 to provide coverage for patients whose primary care physicians did not round at BJH. We have grown from five physicians to a staff of fifty. The division’s faculty act as attending for roughly half of all medicine patients. In addition we oversee the Gold Service, which provides coverage for primary care physicians and specialists who remain as attending.

The division faculty have become integral to the the educational mission of the Department. We provide half of the attending coverage for the firm service, and attending coverage for the Medicine Consult service, and the Procedure service. Hospital Medicine faculty have led or participated in many of the quality improvement efforts surrounding hospitalized patient care at BJH.
